Mobilization Splinting—Overview

Dynamic Splinting is used to increase range of motion by providing a steady, gentle force to a joint, in flexion or extension, over a prolonged period of time. The force gradually affects collagen alignment and causes tissue growth, resulting in increased range of motion. The force applied by a Dynamic Splint can be adjusted and the angle of pull corrected as the condition improves. Dynamic Splints are used only after the inflammatory phase of wound healing to gradually increase mobility, except following flexor tendon repairs or burns when they may be used earlier.

Static Progressive Splinting is one of the most efficient methods for producing permanent elongation of soft tissue in a timely manner. Viscoelastic tissue responds positively to slow, progressively increased force by relaxing and stretching, resulting in permanent plastic deformation.
